Map of Ur

Today

Ur, Mesopotamia is a major city near the Euphrates River and the Persian Gulf. Irrigation aided their agriculture, but natural resouces weren't too abundant. Also, the area was flat and empty. Plus, the land was marshy.

Due to their geography, the city was easily invaded and conquered.

City of Ur

Today

As you can see, the city is surrounded by a protective wall with fortresses. The water sources nearby acted as a natural barrier. The royal palace was near the edge while the ziggurats, other royal palace, and royal mausoleum were in the middle.
