Political System

Ur developed a monarchy, where elected commoners became kings. The king had the highest power, and he could draft common people to work on community projects. Projects included building walls or ziggurats. Also, the kings enforced taxes based on a commoner's percentage of crops. Another fact of the kings is that they came off as divine or godly.

King Ur-Nammu

The first king of the third dynasty of Ur, Ur-Nammu, won the control of the outlet to the sea. In about 2100 B.C.E. he was able to make Ur the wealthiest city in Mesopotamia. His reign marked the beginning of the "Renaissance" of Sumerian art and literature. Later, Ur-Nammu was succeeded by Shulgi.
