Religion

Type of Religion
Ur is associated with the biblical city 'Ur of the Chaldes'. Like all Mesopotamian cities at the time, the people of Ur were polytheistic, meaning they worshipped multiple gods. For thousands of years, polytheism was the only type of religion in ancient Mesopotamia.

Individual Gods
Individual gods were believed to protect the city of Ur and were represented by the ruler of the city. People also had personal gods. For these gods, shrines were built to honor them.

Ziggurats
Another representation of religion in ancient Mesopotamia was the presence of large, temple-like structures called ziggurats. Ziggurats were difficult to build and were believed to be dwelling places for the gods. The Ziggurat of Nanna, a famous ziggurat in Ur, was built for the moon goddess. Nanna was mainly worshipped in the city of Ur.
